I think "profession reacts" in the headline is a bit misleading. This the the Law Society's reaction, not the profession's. Our views are often very different, such as when the Law Society "welcomed" Nationwide's decision to mandate CQS for its panel firms, which decision may have been good for the Society, but was to the serious detriment of many of the Society's members.

As to the Society's suggestion that "It is astonishing that some of the CMA’s recommendations prioritise deregulation over consumer protection", I must say I don't find it all that astonishing. If deregulation cuts down on the time and cost spent on red tape, it will benefit both solicitors and ultimately the client through lower fees.

Is it too much to ask that the Society consults its members before "reacting" to things? It might cut down on the number of instances where their reaction is contrary to our interests. Just a thought.
