Committees, working groups and similar are essential to large organisations, as the governing body could not possibly cover all the work itself, but policy decisions have to be taken by the governing body as to what committees are needed and what their responsibilities should be. TLS's overall governance structure probably now needs to be akin to that of a major corporate entity, with a board large enough to be representative of its members but small enough for prompt, decisive and effective decision making. Even public sector bodies such as the one I work in are adopting corporate-style governance structures. It will not be easy as our profession is now so much more diverse in terms of where people work - large City firms, the high street, in-house (private sector, public sector, charitable sector), self-employed/sole practitioners, and TLS must know the proportion of each - but all professional models, including solicitors who remain on the Roll but may not be currently be working (e.g. maternity leave or career break) need to be represented, with quotas if need be to avoid an imbalance.
