Economics (and one could suggest that this also applied to politics and law) is nothing more than applied history (particularly on the macro-economic end of the spectrum).

If you wish to study how 'the factors of production' (which I find a misleading and simplistic term) are applied and how variations in application result in different economic outcomes then you need to read some history.
