Outcome 1.13 of the SRA Code of Conduct 2011 says "...clients receive the best possible information, both at the time of engagement and when appropriate as their matter progresses, about the likely overall cost of their matter....."
This requirement seems at odds with solicitors being forced to provide an 'up front' price. Clients will, rightly in my view, feel aggrieved when they've seen the cost of a will priced at £250 on a website, only to find that they actually needed tax planning advice and their bill will be nearer £1,000.00.
Services cannot always be commoditised and it is possible that an 'up front' price not specific to a client's needs will merely obfuscate.
