I'm afraid this is a belated cry. I've said it time and again that it will soon come to a time when there would be no more need for a solicitor as it used to be and it's happening now.
The government has made sure that it has managed to whittle down the importance and usefulness of solicitors over the years -and with the compliance of the members of the profession itself whose only response is to issue useless 'consultation papers' at each step.
As regards the Bar who have managed to hold tenaciously to their history and position in the scheme of things thereby refusing anyone to push them around, they had better continue doing so. Otherwise a time would also come when an accused person would be able to get a friend to borrow or rent a wig and a gown and turn up to represent him in at the Crown court .
