"We already live in an unsustainable and extravagant disposable society; you appear to suggest that marriage, where two people commit themselves to each other in law, and sometimes in faith too, should mean no more than any other commercial contract. "

I have always had a fundamental objection to this argument. You can make the legal process of divorce as difficult as you like. It still won't mean that what you are left with is a functioning relationship between the parties.

If one of them thinks it is over and does not have the will to try and make it work, that should be an end of it. The law should not get in the way of them drawing a line under it and getting on with their lives.
