DC by your own previous admission you've never done clin neg and don't understand Part 36. Yet you know everything about it. Hmmmm.

£72k for £3k would not be unusual if it was a complex breach and causation case that was of low value AND it got to trial with cross examination if 3 experts per side. Solicitors costs would be in the region of £15k with the bulk of the sums in expert and Counsel fees.

£30k and £20k for ate and experts fees when the case didn't get to trial is somewhat bonkers. It is not a typical case by any stretch of the imagination and I'm sure most clin neg solicitors will raise their eyebrows at it. Especially as it was Thompsons, a good firm and no mugs.

You don't know the whole story about ABC so don't twitter on about it.

Oh yes, you have costs budgeting and although it is a pain to do it does work and if there is anything that is glaringly disproportionate the judges normally knock it down.

Mind you, I had a 5 day trial listed and the judge only allowed a budget for 2 days, so something was screwy about that. That was for about £8k damages and everyone agreed 5 days was about right. Everyone including the judge.

Go do the work then come back and play. Until you do it's all hot air and you're probably better than that.
