We shall fail-that is barristers, solicitors, legal executives(and anyone else who gives a damn)-if we engage with the MoJ on fees alone. No-one apart from us either cares or sees the connection between our existence and access to justice. Apparently computers and systems can replace lawyers.
We must not talk to the MoJ about fees but instead talk about access to justice.
We must not let the MoJ and the media set the agenda about "too many lawyers earning too much money helping people who don't deserve justice and the lawyers use legal aid to line their own pockets when better systems can allow citizens access to justice systems that offer better value for money for taxpayers".
We are at the bar of the Last Chance Saloon and the nasty thuggish gang of black-clad desperados have ridden into town with the aim of terrorising the good folk of La La Ville so they sell up their little farms and quit.
Will those good folks fight or will they take the money and run? Will some of their neighbours turn against the townsfolk and fight with the desperados?
Its a movie with an ending you can write.
