The treaty is silent on these points. It was not envisaged that ART 50 would ever be triggered. Indeed the process of leaving, as we about to discover, was made deliberately difficult in order to deter dissenters and dissent in the EU is punished severely. What will happen is that the clock will be stopped if needed. That's how the EU operates and why were never good members. For our European friends, law is whatever you can get away with whereas we do what the law says and gold plate it for good measure regardless of self interest. We never really got the hang of the EU.
So there will be shouting and threats of which there has been plenty so far but already there are signs of pragmatism. Politics is the same the world over. Politicians will make a mess of this as they do everything else unless we all work positively on this. If we do not pull together, we all suffer.
