Why would somebody do something anonymously in order to appear "cleverer"? It would be rather futile, don't you think? No I suspect that the person who quoted this Latin maxim appreciates that Latin is a very concise language and cuts to the quick - often using a few words in Latin instead of an entire paragraph (if not more) in English - take "in escrow" for example, which I still use as shorthand. I have to admit that this is a maxim I do not know and don't actually understand but don't feel any resentment towards the person who used it. I would rather become familiar with what it does mean and add it to a repertoire of such phrases and enlarge my mind, rather than be self-satisfied with a small and closed mind that is frightened to encompass anything beyond the banal and immediately accessible!
