There's some truth in what he says, but there aren't enough 'hail fellow well met' types who are also good lawyers. I expect most of us will recall colleagues who were excellent at the law stuff, but a bit stiff with clients. The trick is to spot them, and focus on their strengths - the legal work - and keep them from clients if practicable.

I like the bit about hiring to fit the firm's culture. Presumably he doesn't mean that we should hire white guys from Oxbridge all the time? Looking for a 'cultural fit' too often means 'we must hire someone like me.'
