In my opinion it is the grounding of the academic skills of research, having attention to detail, reporting and legal thinking that is the foundation for going on to practice as a solicitor.
I believe that undertaking a law degree (or appropriate law conversion degree), which requires learning about the history and development of the law and its systems over a prolonged period of time, instils a certain level of respect for the profession in those who choose to go on to pursue a career in the law, even if very little of the knowledge gained is of practical application.
I also like to believe that this respect informs the ethics of the solicitor.
I do not believe that a well-rounded solicitor can be produced purely from experiencing working in a law firm without an academic background. A good paralegal, certainly, but that is not the same thing.
