Anon the Last, The idea of "reforming Europe from within" was always an Anglocentric illusion; hence the endless tensions and mutual incomprehension between ourselves and our partners. This history was played out continuously for 43 years regardless of the political complexion of the British government of the day. John Major and Tony Blair, for example, both were, and still are, passionate Europhiles. They certainly had no intention of forcing purely national interests upon the community; they genuinely aimed to be "at the heart of Europe". But what they thought of as "reform" was a simple impossibility for the organizers of ever-closer union: it contradicted the very meaning of the project.

If you or other readers want to know more about the history you should read my epic poem "The Europiad", which you can have free of charge by e-mailing a postal address to mrmaloney1973@gmail.com.
