Looks like a sound choice to me. If we can't have a lawyer then at least Mr Lidongton has the experience and the brains to approach the job seriously.
As to his PhD in penal reforms, my view is that any serious student of history will readily understand that excessive centralised power over the judiciary is damaging to both the liberty of the subject and ultimately the public status of politicians. I find that a reassuring thought.
As to the former LC, let us refrain from comment, other than to note that accountants and lawyers are very different beasts.
