"As far as the new discount rate is concerned, nobody seems to know if seriously injured claimants are on to a (compensation) winner with the new rate, as on the one hand insurers say they are, but on the other claimant lawyers say they aren't, surely somebody can work out the true state of affairs? In the meantime the only people really suffering are motor insurance customer, which is probably most of us on this website having to pay ever increasing motor insurance premiums."

In order to significantly 'benefit' from the change to the discount rate, someone must have suffered lifelong disability. It will only affect the outcome in the case in any way if the loss is continuing at the date of settlement/trial, but the effects become more significant over longer periods of time, i.e. the most severe injuries.

Against this background, to suggest that "the only people really suffering are motor insurance customer" beggars belief. I would not begin to compare paying £50 extra for car insurance to the kind of injuries suffered by most Claimants significantly affected by discount rate issues.

Whether the discount rate is too low, whether there are other investment strategies with imperceptible or marginal increases in risk but significantly higher returns - these are possibly valid questions. But the tone of the coverage disgusts me.
