I can get by in several languages but if I was in court - especially as defendant - in a non-English-speaking country I would want an interpreter.

If there is some doubt about who has to arrange it and pay for it in those few cases which although civil are dealt with in a magistrates' court then HMCTS and the local authorities must sort that out quickly. And of course the RSPCA whose prosecutions are always on the lavish scale.
