I actually disagree, Taj, with your assertion that most Big Word workers travel by public transport. They cannot afford to. When we were booked directly by HMCTS, I often worked in Birmingham and took the train. It is fast and reasonably reliable. The cost of the ticket is £89.80. The reimbursement from the Big Word would amount to a miserly £40 which means I would be £49.80 out of pocket. This is definitely NOT viable. Interestingly enough, I recently met a Big Word interpreter whilst working for a solicitor who travelled a long distance from Birmingham and was nearly 2 hours late because of "problems with the car". This caused a huge disruption to the trial. When asked about the public transport, she said she could not afford it. If Mr Gould is reading these comments perhaps he may want to explain the ridiculous travel cost arrangement, in particular his decision not to pay any travel time for the first 120 minutes, no mileage for the first 20 miles, no parking and no public transport. How does Mr Gould think his workers get to the assignments which fall within this range? In their private Tardis?
