If you have ever bought anything online, or use social media like Facebook or Twitter, you will have had to agree to the website's terms and conditions. Almost invariably you will find buried in the T&Cs is a blanket consent to use your personal data.

As it is usually impossible to use the online service or buy the goods online without ticking the T&Cs box, query whether agreeing to the T&Cs (whether read or not) can amount to 'consent' in its ordinary sense.

Companies can make a lot of money out of this persona information. I have in the past occasionally advised companies on their FoI rights and responsibilities, always in the context of a contemplated sale of the data.
