The real problem with these cases is that the Courts and Parliament listen to individuals and groups whose circumstances are very different to those of the Applicants/assisted dying advocates.
We can safely say that the religious will accept ANY treatment, any indignity, any degradation at the hands of medical professionals to stay alive. Their dogmatic view is any life, at any cost. Fine, but their religious scruples should not oblige anyone who does not share those scruples to endure an intolerable existence devoid of what they might regard as their essential humanity.
I have a sister in law who has been reduced to a shell with dementia, and still they treat any physical complaint that might carry her off.
Monstrous.
Jane Campbell is always in evidence when cases such as this come up. She was born disabled; that is her life, that is her reality - how dare she presume to speak for Daniel James, the rugby player who went to Dignitas - or indeed for Messrs Conway, Nicklinson and Lamb? These are people whose reality was very different and their severely impaired life was intolerable to them. Those who are born with a disability and those who acquire one are two discrete groups and one should not presume to speak for the other.
And therefore the views of the religious and those who are reconciled to their disabilities should be of no relevance to those who want euthanasia and/or assisted suicide. I’m with the late Sir Douglas Bader when he said that if a disabled man became independent then he was no longer disabled, and I do not believe anyone should be forced to eke out an existence that is intolerable to them, even the mentally ill. JS Mill said nobody should be constrained purely for their own good and this is what we have come to: we are compelling people to continue with a life they wish to leave.
Decision making capacity should be enough.
