Why on earth should the solicitors' profession give him a further interest free loan for 24 years?

He's very lucky to have got away so lightly for 7 years. Most creditors would have insisted that he remortgage the house to pay, which would probably have cost him just a few quid a month.

If he refused to do so they'd follow up with a bankruptcy petition, knowing that funds would suddenly appear from the good old `family member' to clear the debt.
