For the universal down votes that Anon 12.10.17 @ 10.21 received, he is, of course absolutely right in that polls show eg over 80% support the Welfare Cap and over 65% support cutting fees for lawyers. Claimant PI lawyers are largely seen as either downright rogues or wealthy luvvies. Indeed I know 3 Partners who are Lefties whilst sending their kids to private schools (on the back o their working class clients).

As for Anon 12.10.17 @ 12.46, you picked particularly bad examples (accountants & lawyers). Indeed it's only because the public effectively have to use both that they do in many areas. I always enjoy telling people they don't have to use a solicitor because conveyancing firms are notoriously slow. It's just a pity that many banks still insist on a lawyer for mortgage purposes.

In the same way, the closed shop of legal services still exists in the minds of the public (even if a few solicitor advocates have broken through). Do you honestly believe the public choose to use lawyers?! I know they don't and I've been one for 20 years.

That is the problem - reputational damage - that needs addressing and hopefully it will happen, but it'll take years sadly.
