Re Scruff (Anon 12:46)

Years since I've heard anyone bemoan the end of scale fees. Takes me back to my youth

These were not abolished by the Law Society but by the Government. They were imposed by statutory instruments (one for registered and another for non-registered land) with interesting differences between the two.

The scales were meant to be maxima but local law societies throughout the country resolved that the minimum should be 100% of the scale fee so that charging less would be undercutting a warrant professional discipline.

Their end was a great relief to conveyancers. They were published in an awkwardly shaped booklet and many practitioners suffered discomfort when trying to open it under the desk to avoid the contents being seen by clients

Let's not go back there
