While one may decry individual disposals, there are broader and more concerning elements in play here. The Government is keen on the private sector taking on public buildings/functions, and seems to have an exaggerated view of the cost of providing those functions; and a depressed view of the value of the infrastructure required to perform those functions: consequently there abound tales of government disposals of real estate at too low prices.

While this may be a real concern, some of the reported stories are that assets were sold at lower prices than subsequent owners obtained: ignoring market rises and improvements.

I don't pretend that local government is always wise and far sighted, but anecdotal instances of 'sales at an undervalue' should be carefully examined before it is forcefully suggested that a sale was 'for a nominal sum'.
