Treating all litigants alike is fair enough.

But there is a wider point that the rules on service are arbitrary and too favourable to defendants.

Even if the Claimant can prove the process came to the attention of the Defendant that is no good, unless you can show you followed the required formalities.

But then even if you do follow those magic formalities Defendants commonly pop up months later with successful attempts to set aside a default judgement on no better ground than that they have at last stirred themselves, and would like to defend.

Why are Defendants allowed to muck about like this when a trivial lack of formality by the Claimant is so harshly punished?
