Comments on both sides of the argument noted. There is no harm in creating awareness of mental health issues amongst staff generally and helping individuals through workshops to recognise the early warning signs in themselves. However, there is a need to avoid falling into the trap of over-simplifying a very complex area. What is an early sign of depression after all? What is "depression" afterall - as opposed to someone going through a bit of a rough time and being a bit down - not an easy question to answer.... This is something a GP can get wrong, and even some psychiatrists. There is a danger of both under and over-reacting and either could have very serious impact on the individual concerned.

So yes increase awareness preferably with workshops run by people who are suitably qualified, but having one person in charge of first aider for mental health....mmmm.... I feel this is not wise.

And with respect dealing with what can be extremely delicate issues, can hardly be compared with installing fire extinguishers....
