Back in the 18th and 19th centuries common lawyers were poorly paid and educated. (There is a story about Dr Johnson attending a dinner at which there was a person unknown to the general company; when he left Johson was asked if he knew him and replied "I do not wish to speak ill of any man but I believe the gentleman is an attorney"). When the reforms that led to the fusion of law and equity took place lawyers deliberately chose the title of 'solicitor' (those who had practised in the courts of equity) in preference to 'attorney' because of the low status that attorneys enjoyed. (By contrast American lawyers are still called atttorneys). I have thought for some time that by the end of the 21st century the title and profession of 'solicitor' will be held in equally low regard and for the same reason .
