I'm grateful to Mr Dodd - again - and to Mr Heywood and Anon 15.38.

With all respect to Straw and Clarke, neither was anything other than a party placeman at the end of his career when appointed. Both were post Derry Irvine, who was sacked for speaking truth and was the last proper LC.

If, according to Straw and Clarke, there are too many barristers (and overall there may be - as with solicitors. We managed with c. 6000 and 24000 when I set out.) is there now a problem with this strike? Unless it's fully supported; which if so begs the question, why?

It also seems likely to me that the criminal bar - and solicitors - form quite a small proportion of their respective professions.

There seems to be nothing in the offer for the bar most affected.

The problem is much more deep seated and important than money. I suspect that sotto voce the judiciary is telling the government that unpalatable truth. Will it listen?
