"If the government used their energies in collecting the correct amount of tax from conniving and duplicitous multinational companies austerity measures would not have been necessary in the first place".
It wasn't that. HMRC is litigating all the time and generally wins. It was letting the global banks have a 'light regulatory touch', create dubious financial instruments that they didn't really understand, and permit their executives to have a bonus structure which wholly divorced them from the consequences of failure, which has put us in a hole. In a globalised economy collecting tax that is lawfully payable is relatively successful. It's the fact that companies are free to set up where they like and structure themselves so as to choose where they pay tax that is the problem. That cannot be solved at a purely national level.
