James. Judging by Monidipa's opening sentences:

'once upon a time, I took time off work and was able to fully switch off. These days that feels impossible. I have a few days off this week, but I can tell you now that I'll be charging my work phone every day so that I can check my emails'

I would suggest they are a mixed blessing. 25 years ago people went on leave/took time off etc and did, by and large, fully switch off without any expectation from anyone that they would be contactable. Emails are extremely useful of course but do at the same time add to modern day workplace stress.
