Mr Turner, I have indeed not read the judgement but I note this quote in the article above: "But even a Reithian approach to the story – ‘a measured reading of the relevant facts by a presenter in the studio’ – would have been ‘a serious infringement’, the judgment noted". This suggests that the helicopter was quite beside the point.

Mr Jeffries was scandalous because he is a quiet, private individual. Cliff Richards is not. In the fevered atmosphere post Jimmy Saville any arrest of someone like Cliff Richards would have created massive headlines. These are perfectly legitimate.

If you live your life in the public eye and make vast amounts of money from it you have no reason to complain when the publicity goes the wrong way. Celebrities have a right to privacy too but here there were allegations of serious crimes and these should be reported whoever you are and whatever waves such headlines happen to create.
