@John Josephs the 1 year (with consent) and 2 years (no consent required) is also used in Scotland - I long advocated reducing the separation periods under English & Welsh law to mirror the ones in Scotland. There are very few "fault" based divorces in Scotland - I think around 3 or 4%. IN addition, there is a requirement for all financial and child arrangement issues to be resolved and set out in a legally-binding Separation Agreement (similar to a consent order) before being able to apply for a divorce. This usually means that by the time divorce proceedings can be started, the heat has been taken out of the separation, and the divorce itself the last part of the process.
