Terrorists and other violent criminals will always exploit the weakest link in a security system, whether it involves physical bag checking or something more sophisticated. You often see police officers strolling through security at courts with no more than a nod, or possibly showing their warrant card. And in the bad old days in the local courts I appeared at lawyers who were well known to security were also waved through.
Since things changed I, like all other practitioners, have found it to be a constant nuisance to have to go through court security searches, not least because we are recognized and are trusted as people unlikely to be bringing harmful articles into court.
But you have to pause and ask why we are now treated the same as other court users: if we have a free pass, we can be exploited by ruthless criminals. Our loved ones are at risk of kidnap/ torture, and we can be threatened that we will not see them again unless a certain 'package' is picked up and carried through a benign security checkpoint.
I would love to be given a free pass to go into court, but I would then become a security threat and worse, I will then be putting my kith and kin at risk. Call me over-imaginative if you like, but I'd rather stay in the queue, thanks.
