I've been a law firm IT user and subsequent designer, implementation consultant and trainer to client firms. Over thirty years, I have one overriding impression of law firms and IT - potential is very rarely maximised. Practices 'throw away' systems that they have never fully implemented. They allow users to do things 'their way' rather than maximise on the efficiencies offered by the systems. The main problem is cultural e.g. printing and filing volumes of e-mail which would be better handled by linking the messages to matter records. Not training users properly e.g. not being able to carry out a 'document compare' or 'track changes' etc. It is often, though not always, older personnel who are resistant to change. If the people at 'the top' don't lead by example - everyone is allowed to get away with not using systems properly and wasting a considerable financial commitment.
