Indeed, a 'well-informed' client should be able to choose their solicitors without being overcharged.

However, the fundamental point which so many lawyers seem not to understand, is that for more than 11 years now we have been in a recession. This automatically means that both private individuals and companies etc do not want to spend money or if they have to, spend as little money as possible. Therefore, rather than trying to charge on an hourly basis and/or expecting new clients to pay at least £500-£1,000 or more upfront even before they have even set foot in the solicitor's offices, those solicitors should negotiate or renegotiate their agreed/fixed fees in advance with the new client. It is totally baffling as to how many lawyers can't see this unless as always, their greed continues to blind them!
