Well, we all know childcare cases are really simple and are mostly about cruel social workers trying to steal children from well-meaning and caring parents. All my cases were just like that. So I suppose we could do away with expert evidence in child care cases, and leave it to judges in cases that they weren't quite sure about to toss a coin between the views of the social workers and the views of the parents about their ability to provide a decent life for the children concerned. That should save money. The trouble is, the parents might feel a bit aggrieved if they had their children taken away without being able to put forward their best case; and the social workers might feel a bit aggrived if despite their concerns the children went back home, wound up dead or badly injured, and then the social workers got pilloried in the press for not protecting them.
