Is it just me, or when any corporate defendant says that they will defend something 'vigourously', do you too raise a wry smile and think 'But of course you will, dear'?

In the entire history of people purporting to defend things vigourously, has any claimant ever thought 'Oh, right, well in that case I won't bother then'? I suspect probably not.

I once received a response from an insurer to a letter before action. It promised that if proceedings were issued, they would be vigourously defendant "at the very least". The precise nature of this nonsensical threat was left unspecified. Perhaps needless to say, the defence was lacklustre and flaccid, and it did not succeed.
