The legal aid system was much abused by those who were allowed to self certify their entitlement with obvious consequences and now the Government is the abuser by virtually withdrawing it altogether. To their credit the system was dismantled over a very long period of time ( 15 years or so ) but one unfair tactic employed was to introduce an ever increasing number of hurdles to overcome to stay in the game at great cost to those trying to cling onto the monthly legal aid cheque used mostly to run the office whilst other non contentious areas of practice provided the profit. Will it return? No. There is no money and no political will to reintroduce a litigation culture in to UK life.
