Solicitors should think twice before criticising the military and the MoD. How would they react in a war zone. For us it’s about winning your case or getting your completion through. For them, it’s literally life and death.

My nephew, who served in several war zones with the RAF, occasionally compare notes with each other. He thinks that as a senior conveyancing solicitor I have a high pressure job. When I point out that the worst that I get is an irate client on the phone or a complaint which costs a few quid to settle, whereas he has people trying to kill him and his mates, he just shrugs and says that’s just part of his job.

MAXIMUM RESPECT TO THE SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN and if they are occasionally perceived to have overstepped some vague line in the sand whilst serving in a war zone, then they should be afforded the maximum latitude and flexibility. After all, war only happens when the normal rule of law has broken down. The mitigation of ‘self defence’ in a war zone should be extended as widely as necessary, to include defence of colleagues and the mission as a whole.
