I have worked in law firms (accounts) for over thirty years, in that time I have worked for six different firms. (ranging from large to small)

None where ever guilty of criminal wrong doing....

But every single one had many skeletons in many closets, which under the requirement to report probably should have been but were not.

How said skeletons are dealt with is usually the reason that eventually I have to leave. If a person of authority in a new firm, during a job interview asks why are you leaving - the answer is always 'ethical dilemma issues' and leave it at that.

If I ever decided to use said gathered knowledge of skeletons to further my career and climb the greasy pole in a firm then I know that would be the day I would leave the profession. Unfortunately a great many (not all) partners/people in authority at some point have had to make similar ethical decisions to further their career.

It is an impossible situation.
