Anon 8:20, this reminds me of something I read in a Malcolm Gladwell book a few years back. One particularly notable philharmonic orchestra had an unspoken policy of only accepting male tuba players as it was felt that their greater lung capacity provided a better sound output in the end (or something along those lines, can you tell I'm not musical myself?). Following complaint from an eminent female tuba player, blind auditions were held and she was the clear winner. Let merit speak for itself.
