The public want the facilitation of suicide to become lawful now, I think.
They have seen the horrors of dependent old age and of the shell of the body kept alive, in increasing decrepitude when the mind, soul, person, call it what you will, have gone, and they don’t want to go there. Any life, however impaired, at whatever cost, is not acceptable and I most certainly do not want an impaired life. For me that means any need whatsoever for third party care.
Intolerability is subjective and for some people terminal illness with their faculties might be tolerable, but a lifetime of disability might not - as it wasn’t for Daniel James.
Loss of a beloved life partner might make life intolerable for some, as might forced retirement for another, and the religious beliefs of X should cease to be a good reason for compelling Y to continue with an existence that Y finds intolerable, even if that intolerability is for socio economic reasons.
It is time we accepted that a capacitous person should have the right to choose to end their life - the Stoics certainly did - and the means for so doing should be legally obtainable without any more paternalistic fussing.
