What was a mandatory 2.1?
You didn't need anything other than a bare pass (not even a 3rd) to sit the LSF- as you correctly pointed out - a 50% pass rate sorted out those who didn't have the intellectuial firepower anyway. And anyone who passed walked into a job. I only made one formal job application and had three offers of Articles.

There were far fewer people sitting the LSF simply because there were far fewer undergraduates studying law. Most Russell Group unis have doubled or tripled their LLB intake since the 80's and then every ex-Poly has added a law course on top.

A few years ago the Unis were churning out 15,000 LLBs. In the 80's I''d be surprised if that figure was 20% of that number.
