Last month, Obiter profiled Dr Robert Tobin, who had just been named trainee of the year at the Birmingham Law Society's annual legal awards (see [2006] Gazette, 27 April, 10). What made him stand out was that he qualified at Blakemores while continuing his work as a dentist. Our call for information about solicitors who carry on other careers prompted Bristol-based Patricia Witts to get in touch. While working full-time as a solicitor for the Solicitors Indemnity Fund, she gained a PhD for her thesis Images in Romano-British Mosaics: iconography and context. She then had a dual career as a full-time lawyer and part-time mosaic specialist, before taking a break and concentrating on the mosaic research and writing full-time. Her first book, Mosaics in Roman Britain: Stories in Stone was published last year. This image [right] of Medusa from the Bignor Roman Villa in Sussex is one of her favourites and adorned the cover. A second book is on the way.
