It is with great sadness that Obiter has to report the imminent demise of an Act of Parliament that has lasted some 820 years. The Commons Bill - dealing with the protection of common land - is no doubt a very worthy piece of draft legislation, but the fact that it repeals the Commons Act 1285 in its entirety cannot be right. So the campaign starts now: 'Save the Commons Act 1285!' We're sure there must be some Labour backbenchers willing to rebel against the government.
