As readers are by now no doubt aware, Manchester Law Society president Franklin Sinclair is not a man to be pushed out of the limelight. In his latest, ever-entertaining president's column in the society's magazine, he recounts a recent trip to Mallorca for the wedding of the society's 'formidable' (his word, backed up by Obiter's own experience) executive director, Fran Eccles. 'Fran looked stunning for her big day,' he writes, before getting on to the important stuff, 'and so did I, wearing a white linen suit sporting a magnificent suntan.' We are also regaled as usual with the various official events (usually meals) Mr Sinclair has attended, including a valedictory for the retiring Judge Burke QC. Mr Sinclair craves the reader's indulgence to quote part of his speech to Judge Burke (any writer knows that you are on a slippery slope when you start quoting yourself), but it bears repeating: 'I pointed out that he is part of a family well known in criminal circles in Manchester. Not only was his father a barrister but his brother, the late Tom Burke, was a brilliant criminal defence solicitor. I wondered whether some criminal somewhere could proudly boast, "Represented by one Burke, jailed by another".' Mr Sinclair signs off by recommending that readers join him at his annual presidential dinner later this month, where 'I promise to make a politically incorrect, hilarious speech'. From the experience of his various columns in recent months, we have no doubt that he will live up to his word and so Manchester lawyers would do well to be there.
