Reader of the week is Christian Battelley, an employment solicitor at leading Black Country firm Waldrons Commercial. We received a press release under his name last week entitled 'Age is no joking matter', warning about the ban on age discrimination coming into force in October 2006. 'Even seemingly innocent jokes suggesting staff are too young or too old to do their job could give rise to claims,' he said, such as 'an innocent birthday card suggesting the recipient has reached the age to consider erectile dysfunction drugs'. This may well be true but rung a bell with Obiter - not because of any personal need for such drugs, but because an extremely similar warning was recently given in the Gazette (see [2005] Gazette, 12 May, 41), in which we reported a press release issued by the Employment Lawyers Association following its annual conference. We put the remarkable similarity of some of his wording with that of the article, and Mr Battelley honestly put his hands up to being inspired by our story. We have no problem with it, of course - the Gazette is nothing if not a service to our readers - and commend Mr Battelley for reading so avidly.
