After two years in the job, legal aid minister Lord Willy Bach was showing signs of battle fatigue last week as his party continues its fight to cut spending on legal aid and introduce Lord Carter’s reforms. Speaking at the Public Legal Education Network’s conference, he compared the highs and lows of his job to the journey he has had as a Leicester City FC fan. He said: ‘Many of you will know my commitment to those perennial destroyers of hopes and dreams, Leicester City.’ As the old joke goes, he said, ‘with City you lose some, you draw some’. He continued: ‘As a minister too, and especially as legal aid minister, there are moments when it would be easy to feel that things are not working as you want them to.’ But a quick glance at the Coca Cola League Championship, where Leicester City is currently ranked sixth, shows that perhaps Bach’s football team is not doing that badly after all. Indeed, given the impending general election, it could be said that Bach himself is facing a far greater chance of relegation.
