British diplomats from far-flung postings around the globe gathered back in London last week to learn all about how they could become ambassadors for English and Welsh law firms. The Law Society's international department organised an all-day seminar at the Bank of England's museum to launch its guide Exporting Excellence, which is effectively a quick course in why the City firms should rule the world. It undoubtedly went down well with the diplomats, with one of the highlights coming from Laura Devine, who runs a niche corporate immigration practice in the City. She provided some generally useful advice to all immigration practitioners - including, never tell a London cabbie what you do for a living. Explained Ms Devine: 'The moment you make the mistake of telling a taxi driver that you are an immigration lawyer, they will share their right-wing views with you all the way home. I now amuse myself by inventing various jobs that I do as far as cabbies are concerned.'
