Although this week's musical claim to fame is simply for advising clients in the industry, it is a worthy addition to our canon. John McDonnell QC, head of 13 Old Square Chambers, acted for heavy rockers Motörhead in their dispute with management in 1990s. On the day of the hearing, the members of the band turned up in court wearing matching T-shirts with the message 'Judges are nice'. The band won their case, and gave a credit to their barrister on the subsequent Grammy-nominated album 1916. On the back of the album sleeve, the following can apparently be spotted: 'The band sez: Thanks to (and this is where the story really starts)... (various names)... and the Big Mac John MacDonnell (sic).'
The QC also advised on the dispute between Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols, and reveals that Sid Vicious was named after Johnny Rotten's pet hamster.
