The controversy surrounding the wearing of Law Society Representation's 'What Price Justice?' badges in court took a new turn when magistrates told Canterbury solicitor David Nelson to remove his Charlton Athletic supporters' club badge as well. Mr Nelson said: 'It's a tiny lapel badge, about the size of a little fingernail, and I've been wearing it for ten years. Some magistrates have even pulled my leg about supporting a club that's bottom of the premier league.'

Along with solicitors in Staffordshire and elsewhere, Mr Nelson had been told to remove his 'What Price Justice?' badge on the grounds that the campaign to persuade the government to rethink its proposed changes to the legal aid system was politically motivated.

When Mr Nelson protested that Charlton Athletic was a football team (of sorts, some might suggest) and not a political party, he was told that the badge was 'inappropriate in a court of law'. Sick as a parrot - or what?
